GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS) We use Environmental Systems Research Institute's ArcView to capture, store, analyze, manage, and present natural and cultural resource data linked to location. We work with the data sets developed by County and State governments to create mapping in support of comprehensive plans, land use controls, and natural resource inventories. Our GIS work has evolved from earlier efforts modeled after Ian McHarg's groundbreaking approach to Environmental Planning in his book Design with Nature. Mr. McHarg's 1969 book was an early effort to find an ecological approach to planning that linked the worlds of human and nature. His approach sought to more fully and intelligently design human environments in concert with the natural conditions of setting, climate and environment. This was done using a series of transparent maps that overlayed data one on top of another. GIS is an elegant and more efficient computerized outgrowth of this planning technique. 9. PUBLICATIONS 10.
